Crossed Paws Pet Rescue's kennels near Auburndale are turned down by county commissioners
A dog rescue asked Polk County to let it keep and build kennels on a five-acre property, but commissioners denied the request on appeal.
Crossed Paws Pet Rescue, Inc. sought a conditional use (case LDCU-2025-35) to allow kennels on roughly five acres in the Auburndale area. According to hearing testimony, the group's president planned to live on site with dogs registered in her name, existing kennel buildings would become personal self-storage, and new kennel buildings would be set back about 700 feet from neighbors, with fencing added and the site kept closed to the public. The application followed a code enforcement complaint about a dog rescue operating at the location.
The Planning Commission recommended approval 3-2 on June 3, 2026, with conditions requiring fenced kennel areas, no public access, and a caretaker residence on site. That decision was appealed. At a de novo hearing on August 4, 2026, county staff recommended denial β citing noise, setback issues, and that kennels are only allowed in certain residential categories β and the Board of County Commissioners voted to deny the application.
Neighbors testified about constant barking and odor, while supporters described the rescue's work and care for the animals. A written order denying the case "without prejudice" was placed on the commissioners' August 18, 2026 agenda for adoption.
