Polk County expanding North Central Landfill with new cells

Polk County Solid Waste Division is designing and permitting new landfill cells at North Central Landfill in Winter Haven.

Polk County is moving forward with Phase IV expansion of the North Central Landfill, adding 84 geomembrane-lined acres of new landfill cells in the Eastern Buildout Area. Initial construction will focus on Subcells 1 and 2, along with supporting infrastructure including pump stations, leachate storage tanks, and internal stormwater and roadway systems.

The Phase IV area operates under an approved Level 4 Conditional Use Permit dating to 2005, with a 2020 approval for increased elevation to 380 feet. The project is currently in the permitting phase with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection and will have no impact on public roadways or infrastructure outside the landfill boundary.

What happens next

Permitting is being finalized through the Florida Department of Environmental Protection Solid Waste and Environmental Resource divisions.
